“Lake Placid” – “Halloween H2O” director Steve Miner cranks out another horror film that cuts corners whenever possible. Hardly anyone lives on the lake being terrorized by the 30-foot crocodile, so the “dangerous situations” seem contrived. Solid actors like Bill Pullman can’t overcome the script’s weak characterization, and there’s not much theme, mystery or energy established. The comedy is merely simple banter and Betty White playing against type. The croc effects are nicely achieved by Stan Winston Studios, but overall “Lake Placid” is a big underachiever. C+
