John’s “Scary Movie 2” flashback review, Oct. 19, 2021
“Scary Movie 2” — It’s tough to criticize a film when descriptions like “stupid,” “crass,” “vulgar” and “obtuse” could actually be considered compliments. The Wayans Bros.’ second round of giddy absurdity isn’t as funny as the first, possibly because they are making fun of films that are laughable to begin with, primarily the boring 1999 blockbuster “The Haunting.” The opening “Exorcist” segment, featuring James Woods as a decidedly un-priestly priest, is by far the highlight, but the film connects on enough jokes later on (“Mission: Impossible 2,” “Charlie’s Angels” and “Titanic” get skewered) to stay watchable. C+
