“Medium” Season 2 (2005-06, NBC), episodes 1-6 – CBS was no doubt quick to get “Ghost Whisperer” on the air after “Medium” (9 p.m. Mondays on NBC) became an out-of-nowhere hit last winter. Although the mysteries are often thin (Patricia Arquette’s Allison Dubois is simply following her dream-visions, after all), “Medium” remains compelling viewing because producer Glen Gordon Caron (“Moonlighting”) obsessively makes sure the show is centered on the daily life of the Dubois family, which includes husband Joe (Jake Weber) and three humorously true-to-life daughters.
The monsters here are of the human variety, a theme weightier than dreamed-up demons but also a bit played out by the ridiculous number of crime anthologies on the air. But the drama goes a step beyond vicious murders and into the realm of, “Is our kid old enough to walk home from school on her own?” and “Will Allison get home in time to share a bottle of wine?”
Now that’s stuff viewers can relate to.
