Here are nine movies I might consider seeing this fall, plus “Machete Kills,” which I might consider seeing about 10 times. (Links to trailers provided for your convenience.)
1. “Machete Kills” (Oct. 11) — Danny Trejo’s title character saying “Machete don’t tweet,” electrocuting a guy by using himself as the conduit, and throwing another guy into a helicopter to blow it up … this guest-star-packed sequel to my No. 1 movie of 2010 will easily be the most idiotic fun of the fall.
2. “Her” (Nov. 20) — This could possibly be a better version of “Ruby Sparks” as a mustachioed Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with his state-of-the-art, pocket-sized computer, voiced by Scarlett Johansson.
3. “American Hustle” (Dec. 13) — I found director David O. Russell’s last film, “Silver Linings Playbook,” to be overrated, but I’m a sucker for 1970s-looking movies. This one looks to have that style in spades.
4. “Insidious: Chapter 2” (Sept. 13) — The story continues from the 2011 original, and judging by the trailer, so do the scares. This looks like the best basic-but-entertaining horror movie of the season.
5. “All the Boys Love Mandy Lane” (Oct. 11) — Unlike with most genre entries, the trailer holds back a little something: What is it about the title character (Amber Heard) that seems to attract a killing spree?
6. “The Fifth Estate” (Oct. 18) — The fall’s top good-for-your-brain movie dramatizes the events and issues surrounding Julian Assange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) release of secret government documents to the masses via WikiLeaks.
7. “A Teacher” (Sept. 6) — This story of a female high school teacher who dates her male student — told from the former’s perspective — could be an intimate thriller that makes a viewer think about the power of societal pressure and rules.
8. “Zero Charisma” (Oct. 11) — This character drama delves into a personality type pretty much untouched by Hollywood, but one we’ve all encountered and wondered about: the tabletop roleplaying game fanatic.
9. “Salinger” (Sept. 6) — Like many people, I read “The Catcher in the Rye” and became intrigued by the secret vault of J.D. Salinger manuscripts that he refused to publish. After reading his other works — none of which are as good as “Catcher” — I’m less curious. However, the author’s story is still a fascinating one, and this documentary appears to do it justice.
10. “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” (Dec. 25) — If I can somehow avoid seeing the overplayed trailer again between now and Christmas, maybe I’ll get back in the mood for this piece about a shy, imaginative adult (Ben Stiller) who lives inside his own head.

“Machete Kills” is gonna be great. “He” appears to be interesting, and doesn’t Joaquin Phoenix looking much like Tom Selleck?# Posted By Eric | 9/7/13 1:13 AM
