“Hollow Man” – There are two things that make an invisible man movie intriguing – the intellectual aspect and the visual aspect. Screenwriter Andrew Marlowe and director Paul Verhoeven only pay lip service to the theme of being hollowed out emotionally. Scientist Sebastian Caine (Kevin Bacon) is already a bit mad before he becomes invisible, so his plunge into evil is hardly surprising, but they do a great job with the visuals and action scenes as Elisabeth Shue and Josh Brolin battle their invisible foe. Even in this age of constant CGI breakthroughs, the images of Caine writhing in pain as he disappears layer by layer are fascinating. Taking a break from his trademark campiness and gratuitous violence, this is Verhoeven’s best sci-fi film. B
