John’s 300 favorite songs: 130-121

130. Guided by Voices — “Glad Girls” — It seems like Robert Pollard wrote this song in about 15 seconds, but it’s still awesome.

129. Bruce Springsteen — “Youngstown” — This song (made more powerful when he plays it with the band) manages to be anti-industrial but pro-industrial-worker at the same time.

128. She & Him — “Thieves” — It sounds kind of like the cotton theme song. To be honest, though, Zooey singing the cotton theme song almost made my top 300, too.

127. Everclear — “Sunflowers” — Relentless, irresistible pop-rock from Portland’s finest.

126. Rick Springfield — “The Invisible Girl” — Unnoticed by most of the industry, Rick put out a fine power pop disc in 2004; this is my favorite track.

125. Mandy Moore — “In My Pocket” — I love how much is going on instrumentally in what you’d think would be a bubblegum pop song.

124. Journey — “Any Way You Want It” — Rarely has a guitar riff and a voice blended together so magically.

123. Doves — “There Goes the Fear” — Can a pop song make your fear go away? Possibly, just possibly.

122. Paolo Nutini — “Candy” — Get this man some candy, stat!

121. Foo Fighters — “D.O.A.” — No one’s getting out of here alive, so we might as well listen to awesome rock songs like this while we’re here.

John Hansen's GravatarAll the GBV is from Isolation Drills, though. I need to expand my horizons beyond that disc.# Posted By John Hansen | 7/21/10 2:21 AM

John Hansen's GravatarThis might not be the last of the She & Him entries on the list. We shall see …# Posted By John Hansen | 7/21/10 2:13 PM

Matt's GravatarI hate to say to buy a greatest hits by a band as good as GBV cause they have so many good studio discs but they do have a good greatest hits available. It’s only one disc but has over 30 songs on it. It has those more pop tunes like you like from Isolation Drills as well as the earlier lo-fi stuff.# Posted By Matt | 7/21/10 9:50 PM

John Hansen's GravatarI have that disc. I will just have to listen to it more.# Posted By John Hansen | 7/21/10 11:05 PM
